"The universe is wider than our views of it." -Henry David Thoreau-
~~~~
This short story, written in prose form came to me a few days after we brought my son home
from the hospital. The car he was in
left a Mexican road, rolled mid-air four times before he fell out.
Just after he hit the ground, the car landed on him, before it began to flip, end over end.
Nine Hours From Home
by
Candy Porett
Tears burned when they wheeled Mike by.
His swollen hands at his sides,
a pillowcase stiff
with blood that oozed from
his puffy abraded face.
And I celebrated with smiles for days.
"I'm so sorry to hear about your son."
they'd murmur,
with the sorrow of death,
or that of a quitter.
"Not me." I'd say.
"I'm grinning.
Even when I envision bloody white bone
piercing the pale skin of his thigh.
Because I know normal people would be dead.
Not my son.
Other people might be making funeral plans,
just because their kid was ejected
and became a landing pad for the flying car.
We don't make those plans.
We just go home and heal.
Some men cry when they break.
Not my boy Mikie,
Man of Steel.
He just swears a little and acts tough.
I keep giggling at his survival,
especially when he has the energy to mumble,
'Fuck that hurts.'
I tell you lots of angels were spread out
on that hard Mexican dirt
to cushion his fall from that winged car.
Then I think more angels covered his body,
before the flipping metal monster
thudded its weight
on my son.
Some kids would just lay there and wail
Not my boy.
He worried about his friend,
and tried to walk to him.
Just like a movie I think."
This is how I answer their sadness for us.
While in bizarre configurations of threat,
cactus awkwardly expose blossoms of waxy bright color.
While Mike was in surgery having another piece of metal attached to his leg, I waited in the courtyard of the desert hospital.
These lines came to me and only now, nine years later do I realize they are the metaphor for his evolution from the accident.
LOOK AT MIKE NOW!
One of the suppliments that helped Mike recover was colostrum.
We have now found arelated but much improved immune system booster.
Check it out.
